About Krkonoše National Park (Czech side)

Krkonoše National Park, established in 1963, is located in the northern part of the Czech Republic along the border with Poland. It protects the Czech portion of the Krkonoše Mountains (Giant Mountains), which includes the highest peak in the Czech Republic, Sněžka, standing at 1,603 meters (5,259 feet). This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is renowned for its unique alpine tundra, glacial cirques, subalpine meadows, and dense coniferous forests. The park hosts a variety of rare and endemic species, such as the alpine shrew and the mountain salamander, along with large populations of lynx and other wildlife. Historically, the area has been an important site for mining and later tourism development, with ski resorts and mountain huts scattered throughout. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore a vast network of hiking and biking trails that connect scenic points, waterfalls, and cultural landmarks. Winter transforms the park into a hub for snow sports like cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Notable landmarks include the harsh yet beautiful Pec Pod Sněžkou valley and the environmentally significant Luční Bouda mountain hut. The park's visitor centers offer educational exhibits about the local ecology, geology, and folklore. The combination of natural beauty, accessible trails, cultural heritage, and a commitment to conservation makes Krkonoše National Park a premier destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers visiting the Czech Republic.
